CPM Calculator
Work out cost per 1,000 impressions, or solve for campaign cost or impressions, with the formula shown for every result.
Quick answer: CPM = (campaign cost ÷ impressions) × 1,000. A campaign that spends $600 to deliver 50,000 impressions has a $12 CPM.
Calculate CPM
Fill in two values. USD is the default currency — the formula works with any currency as long as both amounts match.

What is CPM?
CPM stands for cost per mille — Latin for thousand. It is the price of 1,000 ad impressions, and it is the standard way media buyers compare the cost of reaching an audience across platforms, placements and formats.
Two things make CPM useful:
- It is platform-neutral. A $9 CPM on Meta and a $9 CPM on TikTok cost the same to reach 1,000 feeds, whatever the bidding system behind them.
- It prices reach, not clicks. CPM tells you what awareness costs. It says nothing about whether anyone clicked, converted or bought.
If you buy on a cost-per-click basis, you can still convert your results into an effective CPM: effective CPM = CPC × CTR% × 10. A $2.00 CPC at a 5% CTR is an effective $100 CPM — which is why search traffic is priced very differently from display inventory.
How to calculate CPM
Three worked examples, all in USD:
| Campaign | Cost | Impressions | Calculation | CPM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness test | $600 | 50,000 | ($600 ÷ 50,000) × 1,000 | $12.00 |
| Reach campaign | $2,500 | 400,000 | ($2,500 ÷ 400,000) × 1,000 | $6.25 |
| Premium placement | $18,000 | 1,200,000 | ($18,000 ÷ 1,200,000) × 1,000 | $15.00 |
Rearranging the same formula answers the two planning questions that come up most often:
- What will it cost?
cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000— try the ad cost calculator. - How many impressions will I get?
impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000— try the impressions calculator.
What is a good CPM in 2026?
There is no single good number. CPM is set by auction competition, audience size, placement, format, season and country. US inventory costs more than almost anywhere else because advertiser demand is highest there. Reported ranges from 2026 industry benchmark studies:
| Platform | Typical CPM range (US) | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Meta (Facebook + Instagram) | ~$5–$14 | Broad reach is cheap; narrow retargeting and finance/insurance verticals are expensive |
| TikTok | ~$4–$16 | Reach and ecommerce campaigns sit at the low end, conversion-optimised campaigns at the high end |
| Google Display & YouTube | ~$2–$12 | Display inventory is the cheapest in digital; in-stream video costs more |
| ~$30–$100 | Professional targeting and a small, valuable B2B audience | |
| Google Search | n/a — CPC pricing | Use the effective-CPM formula above to compare it with the rest |
Treat these as ranges, not targets. Q4 costs 20–30% more than the annual average in most US verticals because every advertiser competes for the same holiday inventory. Your own account history is always the better benchmark: compare this month's CPM with the same campaign last month before you conclude anything.
CPM vs viewable CPM (vCPM)
A cheap CPM is worthless if nobody sees the ad. Viewability is the share of impressions that actually met the viewability standard (roughly half the pixels for one second in display, two seconds in video). The cost of a seen impression is:
An $8 CPM at 50% viewability is really a $16 CPM on impressions a human could see. A $12 CPM at 70% viewability is $17.14 — close enough that the cheaper headline number is not automatically the better buy.
How to lower your CPM
- Broaden the audience. Tiny audiences force the auction to reuse the same people, and the platform charges more per impression. Let the algorithm find the buyers before you narrow.
- Refresh creative. Frequency is the most common cause of a rising CPM: once your audience has seen the same ad five times, engagement falls and the auction price climbs.
- Change placement. Feed and Reels placements usually beat in-app and audience-network inventory on cost and quality.
- Test objective. Reach-optimised campaigns buy impressions cheaply; conversion-optimised campaigns pay more per impression but usually deliver a lower cost per acquisition.
- Move budget out of Q4 peaks if your offer is not seasonal. January inventory in the US is materially cheaper.
- Fix the landing page, not just the bid. A CPM that looks high is often a relevance problem: weak creative, a mismatched offer, or slow page speed raises the platform's predicted cost of showing your ad.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Optimising CPM for its own sake. The lowest CPM is usually junk inventory nobody else wanted. Judge CPM alongside CTR, conversion rate and cost per acquisition.
- Comparing CPM across platforms without checking the metric. Some platforms report CPM on impressions served, others on impressions that met a viewability threshold, and some include or exclude fees and taxes.
- Forgetting the currency. A $4 CPM in a low-cost market is not comparable to a $4 CPM in the US — the audience and the purchasing power are different. Keep one currency in the calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CPM?
Divide total campaign cost by total impressions, then multiply by 1,000. A $600 campaign with 50,000 impressions is ($600 ÷ 50,000) × 1,000 = $12 CPM.
Is a $5 CPM good?
It is cheap for US social and display inventory, and it usually means broad targeting on low-cost placements. Whether it is good depends on what those impressions did: compare CTR, conversion rate and cost per acquisition before calling it a win.
Is CPM the same as cost per click?
No. CPM prices 1,000 impressions; CPC prices one click. Use the CPC calculator to compare them, or convert CPC to an effective CPM with CPC × CTR% × 10.
What is the difference between CPM and RPM?
CPM is what an advertiser pays per 1,000 impressions. RPM (revenue per mille) is what a publisher earns per 1,000 pageviews or impressions after the ad platform's share. RPM is always lower than the CPM the advertiser was charged.
Why did my CPM go up without any changes?
The three usual causes are seasonality (Q4 and election periods), audience fatigue from repeated impressions, and increased competition from other advertisers bidding for the same inventory. Check frequency and the date range first.
Does CPM include platform fees and taxes?
Platforms normally report media cost before agency fees, taxes and any third-party verification charges. Add those in before you compare a platform's reported CPM with your invoice.
Can I use this CPM calculator for any currency?
Yes. The formula is currency-neutral as long as the cost and CPM are entered in the same currency. The USD label is only the default.
How many impressions should I buy to test a campaign?
Enough to reach your audience a few times without overspending: for a small US test, 50,000–100,000 impressions at your expected CPM is a reasonable first read, then scale only if cost per result holds.
