CPC Calculator
Calculate cost per click, estimate the clicks a budget will buy, and turn CPC into the cost per acquisition that actually decides profitability.
Quick answer: CPC = cost ÷ clicks. $600 of spend for 300 clicks is a $2.00 CPC.

How to calculate CPC
| Ad cost | Clicks | Calculation | CPC |
|---|---|---|---|
| $600 | 300 | $600 ÷ 300 | $2.00 |
| $3,000 | 1,500 | $3,000 ÷ 1,500 | $2.00 |
| $1,200 | 800 | $1,200 ÷ 800 | $1.50 |
The planning version is just as useful: clicks = budget ÷ CPC. A $5,000 budget at a $1.25 CPC buys 4,000 visits. If those visits need to become sales, the next step is conversion rate — the CTR calculator and ROAS calculator cover the rest of the chain.
CPC is not what you pay per sale
CPC buys a visit. A visit becomes a sale only some of the time, so the number that decides whether a campaign works is cost per acquisition:
| CPC | 1% conversion rate | 2% conversion rate | 4% conversion rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| $0.50 | $50.00 | $25.00 | $12.50 |
| $1.00 | $100.00 | $50.00 | $25.00 |
| $2.00 | $200.00 | $100.00 | $50.00 |
| $5.00 | $500.00 | $250.00 | $125.00 |
Read the table downwards before you bid up. Doubling conversion rate from 2% to 4% halves cost per acquisition without touching the bid — which is usually cheaper than fighting for a lower CPC in a competitive US auction.
Typical CPC ranges
CPC varies enormously by channel and vertical. Reported working ranges:
| Channel | Typical CPC | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search — general | ~$1–$5 | Legal, insurance and finance are far higher; local services lower |
| Google Shopping / retail search | ~$0.50–$2 | Product feed and margin decide the ceiling |
| Meta (Facebook + Instagram) | ~$0.50–$2.50 | Retargeting usually costs less than cold audiences |
| TikTok | ~$0.20–$2.00 | Lowest of the major social platforms |
| $5–$15+ | Highest CPCs; justified only by high deal values |
Treat these as planning ranges. Your ceiling should come from your own unit economics: the most you can pay for a click is your maximum acceptable cost per acquisition multiplied by your conversion rate.
How to lower CPC
- Improve relevance, not just bids. On search, ad relevance and landing page experience feed the quality score that sets your effective price. The same position can cost half as much with better relevance.
- Add negative keywords. Broad-match waste is the most common source of high CPC. Review the search terms report weekly and exclude anything irrelevant.
- Move budget to long-tail intent. Specific, lower-competition queries cost less per click and usually convert better than head terms.
- Match the landing page to the ad. A message-matched landing page raises conversion rate, which lowers the cost you can afford per click.
- Use the cheapest placement that converts. On social, feed placements typically cost less than in-app and audience-network inventory.
- Fix the conversion rate first. At a fixed CPC, conversion rate is the only lever that changes cost per acquisition without changing traffic volume.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CPC?
Divide total ad cost by total clicks. $600 of spend for 300 clicks is a $2.00 CPC.
What is a good CPC?
One that produces a cost per acquisition you can afford. Reported ranges run from about $0.20 on TikTok to $15+ on LinkedIn, so the useful benchmark is your own maximum cost per acquisition multiplied by your conversion rate.
Is CPC the same as CPM?
No. CPM prices 1,000 impressions; CPC prices a click. Convert between them with effective CPM = CPC × CTR% × 10, or use the CPM calculator.
How many clicks will $1,000 buy?
Divide the budget by your CPC: 2,000 clicks at $0.50, 1,000 at $1.00, 500 at $2.00 and 200 at $5.00.
Why is my CPC higher than the estimate?
Competition, quality score, match type, device and time of day all move the auction price. Broad match and low ad relevance are the most common causes of an unexpectedly high CPC.
Does a lower CPC always mean a better campaign?
No. Cheap clicks from the wrong audience produce nothing. Judge campaigns on cost per acquisition or ROAS, and treat CPC as an input rather than the goal.
What is the difference between CPC and CPA?
CPC is the cost of one click or visit. CPA is the cost of one conversion. CPA equals CPC divided by conversion rate, so it is always higher than CPC.
